Everything is semiotic.
Everything is—
                      that’s right, buddy,
nothing more than what you will
admit to.
Yes, and if
you believe that,
                           everything,
reduced by the quality
of belief to belief’s
quality,
             is red-tagged.

In The Demon-Haunted World : Science as a Candle in the Dark (1997), Carl Sagan imagines that he has offered to show me a fire-breathing dragon in his garage, and, when I get there, I see only "a ladder, empty paint cans, and an old tricycle." He'd neglected, it seems, to mention that the dragon is invisible. This thought experiment imagines my proposing a series of ways to detect the dragon. They are good ideas, he imagines replying, but unfortunately won't work. Flour on the floor won't because dragons levitate, infrared won't because dragon fire is heatless, and spray paint won't because dragons are incorporeal. If Sagan insists on countering every test I propose with an evasive redefinition, it's clearly silly for him to then shift the burden of proof onto me and suggest that, since I can't prove the dragon is absent, it may very well be present. Body, Soul, Spirit: The Ancient Tripartite Person

                 John R. White argues that a shortage of English terms has distorted American translations of Carl Jung and other German thinkers such as Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and Freud. At the heart of the problem is the German noun Seele, which is usually translated psyche or mind. Translators avoid the English cognate soul because of its theological freight, but all the translations are problematic. Translating a native one-syllable German word with the exotic Greek term like  psyche is bad enough, but mind is worse. It replaces the German  soul's care with mental health and creates the confusing oxymoron, unconscious mind , as if there were a self-aware parallel mind playing hide-and-seek, not just a pre-conscious soul-part of the integrated person. Anthropomorphism and the Beatific Vision

  James L. Kugel describes two distinct concepts of God in the Bible (pp. 107-118). The early Hebrew God is a tribal deity, proudly superior to Ba'al but still a face in a polytheistic crowd, possibly paired with a goddess. He wasn't the sole god but merely the god that his chosen tribe was obliged to worship no others "before" (Exodus 20:5). Like Athena, Apollo, and Santa Claus, he is supernatural but corporeal, a gendered person with hands and feet, a front and a back, located in time and and space. In Genesis 2-3, after creating the world, Yahweh breathes, speaks, walks with audible footsteps, and can't see Adam and Eve when they hide.  The same corporeal deity, appears on Mount Sinai--a particular place at a specific time, refuting his omnipresence--and tells Moses, “When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by.   Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be s...
